The most popular answer was basically

su - oracle -c "lsnrctl status"

with various forms of I/O redirection.

I've found that using the -c options hangs more often than not, which is why
I used the << EOF

Either way it still hangs. So in the mean time I've just decided not to
turn it on/off from a script. I'll ask Oracle and see where I get but don't
have high hopes. Still bugs me as to why if cron calls it it works, but not
from the command line! Has to be a stderr/stdout thing but..... I give.
