Does anyone know why I can't write to partition A of a raw device?

  a: 131072 0 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 38*)
  b: 307200 131072 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 38*- 129*)
  c: 17769177 0 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 5257*)
  d: 512000 438272 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 129*- 281*)
  e: 1024000 950272 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 281*- 584*)
  f: 1024000 1974272 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 584*- 887*)
  g: 7385452 2998272 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 887*- 3072*)
  h: 7385452 10383724 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 3072*- 5257*)

We are using /dev/rrza34a as a raw device for Sybase.
Sybase complains that it can't open the device.

Any ideas?
