Your answers were very helpful.

My question was:

We are seeing an odd behavior with our production live data directory.

For example; starting from my home directory /usr/users/pauld.
I can change directory to /usr/users/pauld/temp as we all know with a "cd
temp".

Now my working directory is /usr/users/pauld/temp.

/live/clivedata. How can this be? I would expect to get a "not found"
error message.
This is just making us a little nervous that our live data could be so
visible. Could any user do a "rm -R clivedata" from any were on the
system?

The answer was that the directory was in my search path. Via the CDPATH
command in my .profile.

"one can set the 'cdpath' environment variable which provides a
list of alternative directories to be searched to find subdirectories for
the 'cd' commands. For example, I have 'cdpath' set to:

$ echo $cdpath
/user/rb237/ ..

If, say, I have the following directory /user/rb237/banana and I'm current
in /user/fred/foo/bar I can changing directory directly to 'banana' simply
by:
$ cd banana"
