I am planning to purchase an IBM Ultrastar 18ES hard drive for my
Alphastation 500/300 running DU 4.0
The reason I am going with this drive is that it is the only third-height
18GB drive I am aware of that will fit in my machine. With what is in the
machine already, I am stuck with going with a third-height drive. I want
18GB capacity as well.
My questions are:
1. I have a free 68 Pin connector on the SCSI cable inside. IBM has a 68
Pin Ultra 2 SCSI and a 68 Pin Ultra Wide (Single End) version of this drive?
With what I have, what kind of drive would work best? I believe the Ultra 2
SCSI (LVD) drive is backward compatible with older SCSI buses and may just
be overkill for the machine and SCSI interface I have.
2. Once I install it, how do I proceed step by step in getting this
particular drive up and running? For example, creating device files,
writing the disklabel, etc...
If anyone has recommendations for adding a third-heigt 18GB hard drive or
larger for my machine in a painless manner other than the Ultrastar 18ES, I
would appreciate it as well.
Thanks in advance.
