Thanks to

for quick reply.
In one word, Digital Unix does not support OS upgrading as well as patch
installation for DMS client. Both Serguei and Tom suggested to create an
new DMS enviroment and install 4.0E into it. It is not exactly what we
want. I guess people should not choose DMS if you do not have to. Does
anybody know if Compaq will continue support DMS in next a few years? The
following is Dr. Tom and Serguei's reply:
Dr. Tom Blinn:
You have hit the nail on the head -- "dmu" has no update option. The way
you
update a DMS client from, say, V4.0B to V4.0E is this:
1) Install the V4.0E operating system software into a new DMS
environment.
2) Edit whichever .proto.. files you need to change to implement all
local
support changes, similar to what you did for the V4.0B
environment.
There may be some new files you should consider, but mostly it'll
be the same ones that you modified for V4.0B.
3) Run the "configure" step on the V4.0E environment.
4) Install any supplemental products, and do any additional manual setup
you need to do for your local environment.
5) Shut down the client system.
6) De-register the client system on the DMS server. Re-register the
client
for the new V4.0E environment. (Note that in doing this, you will
LOSE any customizations done on the client during the time it was
running V4.0B.)
7) Boot the client system into the new V4.0E environment. Log in as root
and perform any client customizations needed, such as building a
new client custom kernel. Log out, and the client is ready for
use
by whoever normally uses it.
Serguei Patchkovskii:
OS updates, as well as installation of patches on DMS clients is not
supported, so you will not find any documentation on that. Which is
really a shame...
I would guess the easiest way of doing this would be to create a
completely
brand new DMS environment containing 4.0E, create a fake client, and then
write a little script which will update root areas of the existing 4.0B
clients using that fake client as a template. This will obviously have to
spare configuration files and any custom binaries you have on the clients.
If the clients are only moderately customized, .proto..* and .new..* files
in the client directories will make this relatively painless, but if you
have custom binaries in the client areas, the whole thing may easily
become
a nightmare.
Once again, shame on Decpaq for making DMS a second-class citizen.
