The answer is that, no the ftpd that comes with DU cannot do what I wanted
to do, and I had to replace it wilth
wuftpd

The latest version of wu-ftpd will do what you want. You will need to read
the configuration information and FAQ closely. Do _not_ use any of the
earlier versions as they have known exploitable security problems (and
bugs).
