Restoring Oracle 7.3.4 and Digital Unix 4.0D with vrestore(8)

Hi Everyone,

I have a (potential) problem, and I'm after others thoughts.

We run Oracle 7.3.4 on top of Digital Unix. We're running AdvFS and using
cloning
in our backup routine. 6 nights a week, we do a backup by altering the
tablespaces
to backup mode, cloning, then taking out of backup mode. 1 night a week, we
shut
down the database, clone, then start it up again. The backups are done with
vdump
with the -C flag.

This has worked successfully on this particular system for 15 months. We
test by
regularly restoring the backup onto the development system, about once a
month.
The restore is done from the backup tapes.

Overnight, this refresh has failed, due to corruption in one database file.
Two different
sets of tapes were used without success. We then tried a restore by putting
the
database in backup mode, cloning, NFS mounting and restoring that way. This
did
work.

The last successful restore was in March. During April we did some changes
on
the systems for Y2K. Specifically:

- The development system was upgraded from 4.0B -> 4.0D + Patch Kit 0003 on
6 April.
- The tape unit on the development system was changed from a TZ88 to a TZ887
on 6 April.
This tape was used during the upgrade process, and files restored had no
corruption issues.
- The production system was upgraded from 4.0B -> 4.0D + Patch Kit 0003 on
24 April.

We are currently in the process of doing a full restore from a backup two
days ago, ourselves,
to eliminate the user error.

What we're trying to figure out is where the problem is. It could be any of:

- Media errors on the tapes? (probability of the same file on two different
tapes)
- Errors in the tape unit(s)?
- User error? (the person restoring was an operator, who has not done this
before)
- A problem with 4.0D and Oracle 7.3.4? (Even though, this is supposedly a
certified version
of Oracle for this OS, and we did get the DBAs to test, and approve Oracle
being ready
  for the OS upgrade).

Has anyone else had any experiences (good or bad) with this kind of
scenario?

Thoughts or suggestions appreciated,

gunther
