Original Question:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello list,

We have just installed ADVFS subsets onto a PW500 running 4.0D unpatched.

Everything went well. Did the rebuild of the kernel and reboot, but upon
trying to create a file domain we get this error message.
mkfdmn: domain init error E_ADVFS_NOT_INSTALLED (-1108)
mkfdmn: can't create new domain 'live'

Yes, I have checked the archives and found three posts exactly the same.
All the solutions say make sure "options MSFS" is in your config file. Well
it is and after a couple of rebuilds and reboots we are still getting the
same message.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Now Summary:

I had about 5 replies all sort of suggesting that I should copy my kernel
from /sys/MACHINENAME/vmunix to /. Which I was already doing, so that
didn't help. I got a reply from Dr Thomas P. Blinn who, as usual, was very
informative and helpful. He made several suggestions most of which I had
already tried. His last suggestion was to remove everything in the
directory /usr/sys/MACHINE.

This led me to find the problem, when I cd'ed (?) into /sys/MACHINE I found
myself in /usr/sys/DIFFERENTMACHINENAME. Some where along the lines the
link in /sys had changed to point to the wrong directory. Therefore I was
copying the old kernel into the / directory time after time. After fixing
the link and rebooting everything looks fine now.
