Hi-
Quite a number of people responded to my post; thanks to everyone that
did. A couple of suggestions came in which I have listed at the end
of this message in case they help someone else. Unfortunately the ideas
didn't solve my problem.
I've been doing some testing between systems, and I have some more
interesting information to report on the behavior of Netscape. First,
several people pointed out that I forgot to mention the specs for the
alpha I'm attempting to run Netscape on. It is an AS8400 with 4Gb of
memory, no graphic hardware, VT540 console. Most people who run
Netscape from the 8400 are either using an NCD X-terminal or eXceed.
In both cases CDE on the 8400 is used as the window manager, since
some applications don't work properly otherwise.
When I noticed that Netscape died 'differently' depending on whether it
was displayed from the 8400 to an SGI workstation verses an NCD X-term,
I decided to try it on an alpha that had a *LOCAL* X console. On an
AS1000 running the same DU version and patch level, Netscape launched
to the local X display ran perfectly!!! It had no problem with java
and did not even suffer any delays on a system with 128 Mb of memory.
I was stunned.
In order to eliminate the possibility of some difference between the
two alphas, I launched Netscape from the AS1000 to an SGI workstation.
Netscape locked up in typical fashion, taking 99% of the AS1000's CPU
indefinitely. I tried the same thing on an NCD X-term (running CDE
from the AS1000). Netscape segfaulted, which is the same thing that
happened when it was launched from the AS8400.
I tried one more test; I launched netscape from the AS8400 to the
AS1000 console. Netscape locked up, grabbing one of the AS8400's cpus.
WHY?!?!?!
In these tests, I tried both Netscape 4.51 and 4.6. and used the same
physical copy of Netscape on both machines.
Another interesting aspect of this is that, when I discussed the problem
with our Sun administrator, he decided to try the same test between one
of his Sun servers and an NCD X-term. Netscape 4.51 and 4.6 both failed
with a 'bus-error' when launched from the Sun to the NCD. Note that
Netscape on a Sun displayed to a *LOCAL* console works just fine.
This looks like a bug in Netscape dealing with the remote display of java
applets. For now, I'm stuck without a solution; suggestions are still
welcome.
Thanks, everybody.

I'm running Netscape on an X tube connected to a 2100 running DU 4.0 (nothing)
I'm using 3.2 Netscape because the 4.x versions all died with a memory
fault when Java started, even trying to start the Java console
blasted the thing. What we finally discovered was it was missing
some font. I added a Sun box as a font server in my X font path
stuff and it just started working. I have not a clue *what* font
it needed, but apparently it did need one. (Someone from NCD helped
me with this fix)
I don't know if this helps your situation, but it's something.

Toni,
the best explanation for this I've seen was permission problems. You need
to make sure that the entire netscape tree (usually in /usr/local/netscape)
is owned by root - it is not installed with that ownership. Similarly you
need to make the java tree root owned too. Once the ownership of those two
components match, the java comes up after about 10 seconds. Worked for me.
