I am afraid I broke one of my own rules, concise rather than terse.
What I should have added was, that these are working documents that I 
need to edit, and I don't wish to buy Framemaker, so I was looking for
(possiblyGPL'd code) to convert these into a format that I could work with, 
without using proprietary tools.
