Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any comments on the above packages with
respect to the number of planes the emmulator allocates for windows. We
originally had a number of eXcursion licenses (from Digital, I believe the
product will be supported by Compaq), and tended to run the emulator on the
PC with the window manager back on the Unix box. This setup allowed xdm
connections to pop a window similar to the console desktop on the unix box
console. However whenever one of the X-windows was queried with xwininfo it
would say the the depth was 8. I guess meaning 8 planes or a range of 256
colours. This seemed to be regardless of the visual class, which I thought
may have an influence. Visual class can have values like PseudoColor,
TrueColor etc.
Anyway when we used eXceed, in a similar configuration, ie window manager on
the unix box, xwininfo reported depth as 24, which equates to 1.6M colours.
This seemed to be independent of the capabilities of the unix box (ie 8 bit
card or 24 bit card), as you would expect.
I have searched the control panel settings of eXcursion and have been unable
to find a way to increase the depth. Does anyone have any ideas as to
whether (a) this is a hardwired limitation in eXcursion, or (b) if there is
going to be a new super version of eXcursion at some time that may be able
to handle this, or (c) whether there is a way I can change the depth on
eXcursion.
Personally I prefer eXcursion over eXceed, by virtue of the fact that it is
exceedingly (excuse the pun) easy to setup and manage.
