Related problem (hopefully) Followup3: Upgrade to 4.0E crashes DE C3000 when starting X

Hi Managers,

After a scheduled power outage in our building during which my machine was
turned off but not unplugged I restarted to find no video signal. After
testing the VRC21-Hx monitor and cable, I removed the PBXGA-AA card and
replaced it with another of the same part number but (I noticed) a different
physical configuration. My Alphastation 100 4/233 now kernel panics after
starting the Xserver. Starting without the init.d entry for the Xserver is
fine - no crashes.

I don't have any doco on this card as its a hand-me-down from another
defunct system. There are no switches on this card - my old card had
switches that allowed me to set the pixel frequency, Monitor Refresh rate,
and monitor resolution, but this new card has no visible switches. I'm also
told (perhaps unreliably) that it has a Matrox Millennium chip. I don't seem
to be getting any hardware errors, but being regrettably still very hardware
non compis mentas (sp?) i'm not sure of this and I don't know where to go
from here. I rebuilt the kernel as per archive instructions to no avail.

Any ideas?

The relevant messages on boot are:

May 15 08:26:32 ws2979 vmunix: tga0 at pci0 slot 13
May 15 08:26:32 ws2979 vmunix: tga0: depth 8, map size 4MB, 1280x1024
May 15 08:26:32 ws2979 vmunix: tga0: ZLXp-E
May 15 08:26:32 ws2979 vmunix: kernel console: tga0

They stayed the same for the old card and the new between kernel rebuilds.

What should I do/try ?? As far as I know this new card shouldn't need any
new subsets or drivers.

Ugh.

Regards managers, back to the neverending (?) story:

Joe Fletcher <joe_at_meng.ucl.ac.uk> came up with some interesting
suggestions:
Install Open3D v4.9A. According to the releasenotes for this Open3D
version the ZLX-M (PMAGC-BA) is supported. But shortly after he came
back to me with a note that the releasenotes for 4.0E state that this
card is not supported and that the latest Open3D version supporting this
card is v4.4. However, in section 8.31 in the releasenotes for 4.0E
there is a statement telling that retirement is not scheduled until the
next release of Tru64 (4.0F or 5.0 ?). Now, the minimum version for
Open3D for 4.0E is 4.9. So how do I fix this ?

Note that the kernel subset OSFBINCOM435 still contains files having
entries for the card:

line 171 in /usr/sys/data/cons_sw_data.c
line 358 in /usr/sys/data/pv_data.c
line 130 in /usr/sys/data/tc_option_data.c

Is the PMAGC-BA supported in 4.0E or is it not ? Compaq folks ?
