allowing > 1GB of VM per process

I have a COMPAQ Professional Workstation XP1000 (21264) with 1GB of
physical memory, and 4GB of swap. I'm running DU 4.0E. I need to
increase the maximum VM limit of 1GB per process.

I tried setting the vm maxvas value in /etc/sysconfigtab to maxvas =
10737418240 (10GB) but that didn't seem to work, mallocing more than a GB
would still fail, and the 'limit' command in tcsh still showed a 1 GB
addrspace limit. Once I set the maxvas value, i rebooted the machine. Is
that all that I needed for this adjustment, or do I need to build a new
kernel?

any suggestions on raising this limit would be appreciated.

thanks,

Britt
