Thanks to Neil for his response :-

I have done this on our Alphaserver 1000, though our monitor is a VR17,
maybe my experience will be helpful.

I followed Section 3.3.2 in the 4.0D release notes, which it is a little
confusing as /usr/dt/config/Xservers is ultimately a link to
/usr/dt/config/Xservers.con, and the nice parameter in the notes is absent
from my files.

However if you don't have that handy (it is probably on the web at
http://www.unix.digital.com/faqs/publications/pub_page/doc_list.html)
I changed the relevant line in /usr/dt/config/Xservers.con to

   :0 Local local_at_console /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -screen0 800

and in /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers

:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -screen0 800

Then all was fine after a reboot.
