This is a very late summary from a query logged back in January.
Here is my original question:
I am trying to start Kea X to run Xwindows on our PC, when connecting
to a DU4.0B box, and get the following error on the PC:
XDMCP fatal error: Session failed Session 5 failed for display
W-ASC-OSB-0624.asc.com.au.69.in-addr.arpa:0: Cannot open display.
Kea X can login to other (non Dec) boxes on the network OK. The only
other place we run X displays from the 4.0B box is on the console, so
I suspect this is some configuration or security problem?
Can anyone help?

Summary
The responses pointed me to the reverse DNS lookup on our DNS server (old!
Sun). While we were never able to track down the specific problem, there
must have been a flaw somewhere in the reverse lookup file/configuration.
We have recently upgraded our DNS to run on our AlphaServers and the problem
has gone away.
Credit goes to the simplicity of DEC (Compaq's) BIND software as compared to
the old and more difficult version on the Sun box.
