SUMMARY: RIS trouble installing on a DEC 3000

The solution was simple, but Tom Reu had to point it out
to us: We weren't running mountd on the RIS server.

We used nfssetup to set up the nfs daemons. You have to
tell nfssetup that you _will_ be exporting directories, but
you do not need to specify any to export, as the ris utility
has already taken care of the /etc/exports file.

Many thanks to Tom Reu for his insight, and thanks to
everyone for your time.
