Thanks a lot for the replies that pointed me to the correct solution.

ANSWER:

It was a huge tmp file that was created and then deleted that causes my system
to complain about "file system full". Since it was deleted soon after the
creation, I wasn't able to catch it when I type df, du or showfdmn commands.

What happened was there is a cron job that runs every hour under the sybase
account. The cron is trying to send a mail to this sybase account that has a
size of 180MB in the /var/spool/mail directory! Apparently when you invoke
mail, a tmp file of the same size is created in the /tmp directory. Once the
mail processing is finished, the tmp file will be deleted automatically.

A number of you have suggested using "lsof" as a tool for troubleshooting. I
agree this is a very useful tool, however , in my case, just like my other
commands, it was launched at the wrong time, when the huge tmp file is already
gone. That's why lsof also didn't show me immediately where the problem is
coming from..

My original question is :

Why is it that my system keeps complaining that my / is full when df, showfdmn
and du all show that I have ample space available?"

Regards,

Carlos
