Thanks for immediate responses from Knut Hellebo and Roger Leonard,
for suggesting a dumb terminal and WinDoze Hyperterm, respectively.
As it turns out, we have both avenues available to us, but the old
Ultrix box consoles are up in the "attic", while we have an NT
server sitting next to our 4100. The old laptop cable connected
to COM1 of the WinDoze box, start up Hyperterm (8N1_at_9600), and
we're already talking to the controller.
So we don't have to fuss with trying to bring up the right processes
under single-user mode from the 4100. That would've been more work
than was worthwhile, especially with such a simple solution sitting
under our noses.
