Compiling glibc on DU4.0D

Hi,
We are trying to install GNOME to have access to a couple of the GNOME apps
and are getting stuck while trying to compile glibc. Has anyone had any
luck at compiling glibc. If so, any "pointers" are greatly appreciated.
