NFS mounts from Linux hanging

I have a client's machine that PPP's to an Alpha running
DU4.0D with patch kit 3 installed. Everything works (telnet,
netscape, etc.) from a Red Hat 5.2 linux client except mounting
a disk exported from the Alpha. The mount command on the Linux
box just hangs with no indication why.

I believe the exports file is fine, because the mount used to fail
with permission denied when I had a typo in it. I suspected messed
up arp tables after I fixed the typo, but a reboot (of both machines)
didn't fix the problem. I've also tried running mountd with no options,
and just the -i option, to no avail.

I'm looking for any further hints. Is there a way to increase the
logging of the mountd or nfsd processes (I found nothing to that
effect in the man pages)? Has anyone seen this before?
