These 3 messages are comming up in the daemon.log every hour can anyone tell
me what they mean and where they are being turned on from. i.e is it acct or
such like.
the system is a 4100 runing 4.0.

Replies,
1)If the machine is meant to be running a DNS server then that is probably
OK. If
however it isnt and you want to shut it off. Then you might want to delete
or
rename the S*named file in /sbin/rc3.d
After doing ./S*named stop of course
2)These are statistics messages created by the named. (DNS running on this
machine). The reason they are every hour is the default named stastic log is
set to 60min. This can be changed in the named.conf file.
3) Here is a quote from DNS and BIND 3rd edition (pp. 158):
"About every hour, a BIND 8 name server will send a message at
priority LOG_INFO that snaphots the current statistics."
In the same book, there is a whole chapter in which everything
about these log etries is explained in great detail.
4)A list of explanations for the data are given in the named(8) man page.
