More info on recording CDs

Further to Karen Byrd's request for info on recordable CD's
we have been trying to get a YAMAHA CRW 4416S SCSI CD Rewritable drive
to work both with Alpha and Sparc systems.

Points to note:
1. On two different AlphaServer 4100's with 5.3 firmware, SRM would not
see the drive at all.
We tried various power up, SRM init and show dev commands to no avail.

2. On a Sun SS2 and Sun IPX strange effects:
The CD has a jumper to set 512 byte sectors (vs 2048)
If you insert the jumper the Sun box cannot read its OS CD
(both SunOS and Solaris) because the CDRW is told to go to 512 byte
mode (which it already is in) and returns an error.

If you remove the jumper (2048 byte sectors) the Sun will
set the CDRW to 512 byte mode load the OS then on reboot of the
just loaded OS reset the bus and thus the CDRW returns to 2048 mode
and fail to read the rest of the CD.

According to the reference for cdrecord:
    http://www.fokus.gmd.de/nthp/employees/schilling/cdrecord.html

the YAMAHA 4416S unit is one that is recommended and on paper looks good
but we have been unable to get it to even be seen from SRM let
alone boot a 512 byte Operating System CD from either Digital Unix or Solaris.

Anyone got any ideas?

Regards,
