SUMMARY: Executable Files in /etc ?!?

Thanks to Guy Loucks for replying.

Special thanks to Dr. Tom Blinn of Compaq (Digital) who said he would
investigate why DU 4.0's "out of the box" configuration includes execute
permission on files that aren't normally considered to be executable
programs. No explicit promises of changes or a patch, though.

Meanwhile, I've gone through the contents of /etc and removed exeucte
permission from files that are obviously not binary executable programs or
shell scripts. So far, there has been no ill effect. I can't promise that
there won't be any problems in the future, however. Until and unless
Compaq issues a patch, if you follow my example you change permissions on
"system" files at your own risk.
