Attepting to partition a drive

I'm getting rather frustrated trying to setup 4.0d on a Personal
Workstation 600au. I want to do a custom install so I can setup the
partitions to something that works better for us.
I just want to set it up, so there are 2 partitions. / and swap1. Since
this is usually the best layout for a Unix Workstation(especially since we
don't have any local user accounts or locally installed software). I'm
struggling with the Disk Partitioning GUI,(will disklabel work with the GUI
custom install?) Is there a way I can select a different partition
configuration than its 3 that it defaults to. I.e, 1,4, or 5 partitions. I
am asking too much here, or am I missing some real simple thing.
One other question, is the GUI partitioning thing a little bit buggy? I
was just trying to partition a drive, when suddenly the partitions started
"sliding" around and reformatted them selves. Looked rather amusing. I
wasn't going crazy because someone else here saw it too.
Will this install program let me just put /usr and friends just as
directories on the / drive, or must they be partitions?
