My thanks to Nizam Khan for the answer to my difficult-sounding yet very
simple problem. The answer turned out to be that tar had messed up some
permissions after restoring the system, and dtterm needed to have its suid
bit set.

My original question was:
> After really screwing up the system, I had to reformat the hard drive,
> reinstall Unix (v 4.0D, I think) then restore from a tape archive.After
> doing this, when physically sitting at the workstation and logging in,
> any user other than root gets this error message when trying to open a
> terminal window "Dtterm: unable to set nonblocking on pty".
> Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?
