Intermittent booting problem

Hello,

I have a Digital Personal WorkStation 500au running
Digital UNIX V4.0F (Rev. 1229)., with four AdvFS
partitions. The root domain is on the "a" partition.

It has an intermittent boot problem. About 1 of 10
boots will not read the boot block on the DEC RZ1CC-BA
disk. The message is something like "Can't read device dkc.0.0.1009.0"
After the firmware tries two or three times it sometimes
succeeds. Other times this happens, a cycle via the
front pwr switch is needed.

Today, I got this message during bootup.
"Block 0 of dkc.0.0.0.1009.0 is a valid boot block."
...omitted ordinary boot up msgs...
"can't open osf_boot"

After a couple of attempts of booting from the
cmd prompt, it came up. It takes many reboots
for the concern to re-occur.

The only odd thing I see is that the disklabel
shows "flags: dynamic_geometry" when using the
disklabel with -p switch. Using disklabel -r,
the "flags:" field is empty.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
