My original question:
I'm after an equivalent to HP UX Ignite for Tru64. For those not familiar
with HP Ignite, it basically uses one command that generates a bootable DAT
(or DLT) tape, that once booted from will automatically recover your system
disk in the unfortunate case of losing it. It can also be used to 'clone'
servers when they are first installed.
I have searched through the archives back as far as 1997, but I cannot find
anything.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
I had three useful responses:
Pierre Wendling suggested looking at the bootable tape commands btcreate &
btrestore. This looks to be exactly what I want. He also suggested being
very careful if you use these in batch mode, and gave me an extract from a
script that he uses.
Joe Fletcher also suggested using these utilities.
Dr. Tom Blinn gave a more elaborate description of the history:
Bootable tape support was added in Tru64 UNIX in V4.0B. It's in the release
notes, and should be covered in several reference pages, although I can't
say
off the top of my head the full list. Check the V4.0D release notes also; I
am pretty sure we carried the information forward, since we didn't update
most
of the manuals. For V4.0F, the documentation has probably moved into either
the system admin book or the install guide.
I am assuming, of course, that you want this for V4.0D or later, since any
of
the versions prior to V4.0D will not be year 2000 safe..
Dr. Blinn's assumption of us wanting this for V4.0D or later is correct!
Thankyou very much for your time and effort.
