Dear Managers,

Many thanks to the many people who (very quickly!) responded to my
problem --

alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
sean_at_stat.Duke.EDU
tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com
hall_t_at_lxe.com
nayle_at_ncsbah.com
(I think that's everybody)

which was my external drive on a separate SCSI bus was not being
recogized by my xp1000 on booting.

The answer involves doing a kernel config and booting the system with
the new kernel (something I'd done under linux but not had the
opportunity to try with DU):

boot -fl s -fi "genvmunix"
doconfig
(copy vmunix.new to vmunix)
(boot system with new kernel)

I tried this procedure and it worked fine.

thanks again to everybody that answered,
