--------------
I was interested in the differences between some of the Tru64 unix
releases, because developers were asking for 4.0e, and I had heard rumors
that 4.0e wasn't really an upgrade to 4.0d, but just added hardware
support, and 4.0d was what was really the current most up to date release.
Well this is not so.
4.0e was a hardware update to support the EV6 processor, but 4.0e with
patches should be just as up to date as 4.0d with patches.
4.0f adds support for many other things, which can be found out about in
the release notes for it, which I will provide the address for at the
bottom of this message. 4.0f also fixes numorous other bugs. I didn't
really find out if the fixes that are in 4.0f are also in patches for 4.0x
series.
Another concern of mine was that I had also heard that 4.0e was no longer
supported, that it was just a temporary step. This is also false. DEC
support told me that there was no plans as of yet to discontinue support
for 4.0e or 4.0d =<.
4.0d, 4.0e and 4.0f are all available for purchase in case I need to
purchase one.
As of why our engineering teams decided we needed to go to 4.0e, is that
with the new release of their software they wanted to make sure it was
working on the "latest and greatest", not knowing that 4.0f is out there.
Now they want 4.0f. But then, these are the same people that come running
to me every time a gnu product is updated. They just don't seem to get it
why I don't update the software every other day...

--Original Question---
Recently, a group of developers came up to me and stated they "NEED" V4.0e
NOW. Well, as I handle all requests like this, I want to fully understand
the differences first, before I comply or deny(ever so fun) these "requests".
Here's our situation. I have about 6 machines running 4.0d.
All AlphaStations, 333mhz and up. I know there is 4.0e, 4.0f, and soon 5.0
out. I also heard someone say that 4.0e really isn't a newer version that
4.0d. But 4.0f is. So if someone could straighten me out on the differences
to these versions I would be happy to summarize.
I tried searching through the Archives, but didn't have much luck. Is
there a search engine out there for the archives? Also, didn't see much of
Digital's, well... Compaq's webpage.
thanks
