Many replies, fast response, thanks a lot!
Consensus of opinion confirms my thoughts, the SWXCR will work with the
external BA-356 cabinet, many other sites are doing just that.
A couple of extra points mentioned were:
1) when setting up the RAID sets, ensure you set all the bus speeds to
MAX -
they were set to 10MHz by default on a lot of the ones we got.
2) it will work, but it's not a reccomened configuration since the
raidsets
on the external cabinet can go haywire if the ba356 looses it's power
before the controller has flushed it's cache to the disks in the
cabinet.
This concerns RAID5 in particular, but you should be careful with
other
types of RAID also.
3) There is an adapter kit that splits the bus of the internal shelf.
You
can than run two channels internal. You would also need a
pigtail (it's a small cable that runs the 3rd Channel to the
outside).
4) The big question is what type of drives do you have, and what SWXCR
do you
have. As long as you match up SCSI types, it should be no problem.
None of these are an issue for me, we had the stuff all cabled up and
seemed to be working, but I wanted to make sure we were'nt doing
anything silly. Support here is not to the same level as larger
countries, if we do something that is not 'kosher' they're likely to
take a _very_ long time to come up with solutions. (Recently it took at
least 3 weeks for them to source a SCSI cable that was ordered with the
system).
Thanks again for all the replies,
Simon
