Hello System Managers,
Finally, here is a solution to the problem with Jumbo Patch
Kit 3 (duv40das00003-19990208) that I reported way back in April.
I'll describe the original problem here, but if you want to see
my original posting and subsequent "no-solution-yet" summaries
#1 and #2, please check the archives.
The problem is as follows:
I'm running an AlphaServer 2100 4/200 with Enhanced Security.
Installation of Jumbo Patch Kit 3 for Digital UNIX 4.0D, caused
my system to be un-usable -- The system would boot to multi-user
mode fine, but no users could log on from anywhere, not even root
from the console. Somehow, part way through the login process,
each user would get "kicked off". To make the system usable again
I had to do one of the following: (1) Completely back out of the
patch (lucky I chose "Reversible" during patch installation), or
(2) Replace the current (useless) root disk with the backup root
disk that I should have been wise enough to make before messing
with ANY jumbo patch. Compaq support tried to help me out, but
couldn't reproduce the problem on their machines, and I finally
ran out of time to try all the things they wanted that would
generate enough information to enable them to pursue the problem.
A couple of other users contacted me after I posted because they
were having the same problem. So I know I was not the only one
suffering from whatever was going wrong.
Thanks goes to a very kind reader of the archives of this list
who was experiencing the same problem, and figured out a good
solution way back at the end of June. This reader sent me the
solution back then, but I waited until now to post the summary
since yesterday was my first opportunity to give it a try. It
worked fine. (I don't want to post the name and email address of
this person unless I get permission first.)
The solution is to install the whole jumbo patch kit
EXCEPT FOR THESE TWO PATCHES: 176.02 and 351.02. Both are
security related patches having to do with a user's audit trail.
176.02 --- su Static Library Correction, Security
351.02 --- su Shared Library Correction, Security
I'll submit this information to Compaq software support in the
hope that it will be helpful in determining where the "bug"
really is in these two patches. I would like them to at least
suggest ways for me to avoid this problem in future jumbo patches.
