SUMMARY: disk usage discrepancy

SUMMARY:
given as (reached from its) arguments.

'df' counts the amount of space used in the filesystem.

The obvious difference is in any files used by some running process (=
still existing on disk) but already deleted (= not reachable from any
directory) and unlinked. This is typical of /var/tmp where many temporary
files have had their names removed while the file is still in use (*). The
most likely cause is one or more large files that are open, but unlinked.

Another is in any directories in that file system which are used as mount
points for other file systems, because that will make their "local" entries
inaccessible. (we are nfsmounting/sharing /var/spool/mail).
