Thanks to Alan Davis, Dr. Tom Blinn, & John Francini for their replies...
Alan mentioned once seeing a document from Compaq Services about configuring
non-standard drives, but that file seems to have been purged from their
website archive. Both Dr. Blinn & John Francini suggested that I acquire a
more current drive (one supported by DEC).
As it turned out, I managed to borrow an old Plextor 6x SCSI CD-ROM from our
IS department. That drive was seen by the firmware and I was able to begin
to boot off of the OS CD. The appeared normal as it read the kernel from
the CD, but once that kernel was loaded, I received "No media in device"
errors and the installation failed.
After a reboot on my PC, I was reminded that the Plextor 12x cd-rom was a
SCSI drive. I decided that since the 6x was read by the firmware, the 12x
might work. It was recognized by the firmware and I was able to boot off of
the CD and proceed with the install. Now I'm just left dealing with a hole
in the front of my PC while the workstation uses the cd-rom.
Thank you again,
John Losey
