Hi Manager,
I am sorry for not clearly describe my situation. Actually, we use a backup software called "NetWorker" to control a Tape
Library. The advantage is that it can backup all hosts on the network. But unfortunate, when bootup with CD, the minimum set OS does
not support neither networke connection (for remote host) nor specially SCSI connection (for local host).
I have some plan trying to resolve this problem. One is as description of my previous e-mail, use CD to boot first, rebuild a
"CLEAN" OS. This OS could support networker connection (for remote host) and specially SCSI connection (for local host). Then reboot
again with "CLEAN" OS to connect the Tape Library. Finally, restore original OS from Tape Library.
The key point in this plan is to use BACKUP OS to overwrite CLEAN OS. I am not sure does it work. So I want to known if we can
overwite a running OS successfully?
Best regard,

Subject: Questions about OS Backup
Hi Managers,
I am studying Backup now. We plan to backup our OS with backup equipment. When disaster happen, use CD to boot the system, and
rebuild a "CLEAN" OS on disk. After reboot with "CLEAN" OS again, restore original OS from backup equipment. Our OS version is
DecUnix 4.0E.
My question is:
1. When OS is running, could we use backup OS to overwrite it? If the OS open or lock any file when running?
2. Do you have any suggestion for OS backup?
Best regards,
JFYeh (jfyeh_at_tsmc.com.tw)
