got no answers from the list but did get an answer from DECompaq...
jumbo patch #4 broke vdump in that now vdump tries to update the atime
for each file. NFS doesn't like this at all. Solution was to go to the
backup dir '/usr/var/adm/patch/backup' and put back into production the
version of vdump that doesn't do that.

I did this yesterday and last night's backups worked as expected.
