SUMMARY: Changing the image on the CDE login screen

Thanks to Russ Auld & Ken Lawrence who helped point me towards an image
converter that would create the proper "bitmap." I ended up ftp'ing the
file to the UNIX box as a .gif and then opening that .gif with the "Image
Viewer" under Applications in the CDE and choosing the "Save As" function to
save as an .xpm.

Similar information could also be found in the post "SUMMARY: Long Error
Messages" from 9AM PST this morning.

Thanks,

Subject: Changing the image on the CDE login screen

I was looking in the "CDE Advanced User's & System Administrator's Guide"
for information on how to change the image that is on the right of the CDE
login screen. The table of contents listed "Changing the Login Screen
Appearance" on page 12.

It said to change the logo: 1) copy /usr/dt/config/C/Xresources to
/etc/dt/config/C/Xresources and then in the file in /etc/... set the
variable:
Dtlogin*logo*bitmapFile:
to your desired filename.

I've created a .bmp file on my PC and ftp'd it in binary mode to the
workstation (DU 4.0d PK4) and placed it as /usr/users/johlos/logo.bm

I then set this in /etc/dt/config/C/Xresources:
Dtlogin*logo*bitmapFile: /usr/users/johlos/logo.bm

I'm seeing odd behavior as I do this. If logo.bmp has dimensions of 50x50
pixels, then no image appears on the login screen, but there is a vertical
bar to the right at the spot where the image should be (it is about 10
pixels or so wide). However, if the logo is larger (say 75+ pixels), then
in ReflectionX I start to connect to the server and then it immediately says
"Connection reset." From the console, it will go into this loop where it
starts to display the black background & the console log, but then begins
refreshing and drawing those boxes again.

Is there something I'm doing wrong with the file format?

Has anyone had success with changing the logo?

Thanks,

John Losey
