"tar" and extended uids?

Folks,
  Does anyone know where I can find a version of the tar command
  that can preserve uids greater than 64k? I am using Digital Unix
  V4.0D with the extended uids enabled but unfortunately the "tar"
  command does not work for uid's greater than 64k?
