DT messaging?

I've been having a login problem with two DEC 3000 boxes (models 600 and
300) running DU 4.0E (no patches installed as of yet) in which, after a
non-root login is attempted, a dialog box appears reading the following just
after the system enters the Common Desktop Environment:

"The DT messaging system could not be started."

The user is then forcibly kicked back to the login prompt. After checking
the user error log, I found the following:

(box name) syslog: libtt[PID]: could not parse X display name ":0"
(box name) syslog: libtt[PID]: could not parse X display name ":0.0"

The CDE User's Guide offers no information concerning "DT messaging" or how
to disable it.

What is DT messaging and how can I get around this dialog box and restore
normal user logins? Has anyone encountered this before? I know others who
are having the same problem (running DU V4.0E) and they have no idea what it
is or how to get around it. Are there clues I'm missing? Any suggests will
be greatly appreciated.
