Vrestore woes

Dear Tru64 managers,

I am troubled by a problem I have encountered with vrestore.
I created a vdump saveset with:

        /sbin/vdump -0 -C -f /dev/nrmt0h -D /filesystemname

I am now attempting to restore selected files from this saveset.
        Initially I used vrestore -i.
This listed the files I was after and I "add"ed them and tried an
extract.
After several minutes the vrestore returned:

vrestore: unable to read from device </dev/rmt0h>; [5] I/O error
vrestore: do you want to retry?

Neither a positive nor negative response to this was successful.
I have cleaned my tapedrive - the media was new when the vdump was
taken and I have even tried a non-interactive restore with the same message.
I can be certain the vdump was okay as this was an end of year tape
and the vdump standard out was e-mailed to an administrator - all intact.

Any helpful responses or solutions would be appreciated, or if this
is simply bad news - I will be sitting down.
