We put jumbo patch 4 on our 4.0D system on Friday. It ran fine all weekend and
yesterday, but today it has hung three times. Since our academic quarter is
starting tomorrow, we know that the load on the system is heavier than it was
the past few days. When the system hangs, we know is still running, because we
are seeing log messages from a remote machine on the console (complaining that
the system will not tell it the time), but we cannot login over the network,
and even a root login previously established on the console hangs on any
command. The system is a server for nfs filesystems, sendmail, and DNS name
service as well as being our NIS master. "Normal" users are not allowed to
login to it. Before we waste a lot of time trying to figure this out, has
anyone seen this behavior on any 4.0D systems?
We are hoping that it is not a Denial of Service attack, but will start
investigating all possibilities if the response from the list is negative.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
