The simplest answer was to test the port by using telnet.
Ex. telnet <IP address of machine> <port number>

Sorry if this is outside the scope of this list, but does anyone know of a
utility or command to test whether a user has access to a specific tcp/ip
port? We deliver software to customers that requires use of a specific
port, and it would be nice if I could find a way of directly testing port
accessibility and not having to weed out other possible problems. Also, if
you can direct me to different mailing list that would be helpful.
