First, Thanks to all who responded.
A summary of the problem:
TL-893 Library seen by console, unix and scu but not operable
by networker.
Networker software hangs inturruptably when accessing robot.
Alan, from Compaq sent a list of tests:
o Does the console see the media changer?
o Does the kernel see the media changer when the system boots.
o Verify that you can see the media changer with scu(8).
o See if "show device" with scu(8) works. That will ship
an Inquiry command to the device. Don't use the special
file to set the bus, target and LUN, since that will go
through the media changer driver and probably hang. Use
the "set nexus" command in scu(8).
o If "show device" works, try Test Unit Ready (tur).
o If that works, try "show pages".
In my case, these tests were all ok up untill the tur test, which
said the unit was getting ready to be ready.
Upon reflection, I wondered if the unit would report ready with no tapes in
the library ( which was the case - I
had not loaded any tapes yet ) or if it required tapes. I put several
tapes into the library and let it inventory
and the unit passed the tur test.
I then tried the networker jb_config command with autodetected scsi
library type and it did see the library
and configured normally. By the time I finished jb_config, networker
was resuming it's backup using a
freshly loaded and labeled tape from the library.
Gustav Siegel sent information as follows:
you need
1.) MRU1.3
2.) SCSI_CAM_Layered_Components for Media Changer
(from Associated Products Vol 2)
Information number 2 reflects what I had learned before my previous post,
which was that the SCSI_CAM_Layered_
Components from the MRU installation CD version 1.2 were not compatable
with Tru64 unix 4.0F and would cause
a system crash whenever one tried to access the robot through those
drivers. Installing the CAM package from
the 4.0F Associated Products Vol 2 CD fixed the crashes.
Another clarifying fact for the record, MRU is not required for
networker to operate. It may be a usefull tool for
troubleshooting in a networker environment, providing another software
means of accessing the robot to verify it's
operation.
Note for TL893 users, 00 (ready) status on the front-door indicator may
not reflect unit ready on the robot. Make
sure that at least some tapes are loaded before you try to use the robot.
