This list is great !!!
Thanks very much for the suggestions . Finally it turned out that
i had my console option set to serial instead of graphics. This was
suggested by Peter Reynolds.

Have you booted this particular media on any other system? What type
of system are you trying to boot on (and is it supported by V4.0D)?
What brand of CDROM drive have you got (original delivered with the
system, some replacement)? Have you verified the CDROM hardware is
good? And so on.. There are MANY things that might be wrong, and
you have provided VERY little information for anyone to go on..

The firmware should be new enough; as to whether that is supported with
DU
4.0D, I'm not sure; I don't know very much about those 3rd party
re-packaged systems. You might want to post a followup to the
tru64-managers list with the additional info to see if someone else on
it
might have more insight than I.

This is just a guess, but have you upgraded the console firmware? I
believe that if you try to boot the install CD using a 'very' obsolete
console, you'll see this problem. I've only seen it once, and then
immediately realized that I hadn't upgraded the console firmware. I did
the console upgrade, and install went smooth from there. Note that I'd
just forgotten the firmware upgrade, and didn't try to diagnose the
problem further.

Have you checked the 'Console' variable to see where the console output
is
directed?
You need to do the following:
>> sho console
then
>> set console 'serial' or 'graphics'
depending on what type of console terminal you have

What version was it running before and have you updated the firmware to
the minimum required by 4.0D?

I do a sho device and try to boot from the install cdrom boot dka600
But it just hangs at "jump to bootstrap code" line.
What can be the problem and how can i get over it ??????
P00>>>boot dka600
(boot dka600.6.0.2001.0)
block 0 of dka600.6.0.2001.0 is a valid boot block
reading 16 blocks from dka600.6.0.2001.0
bootstrap code read in
base = 200000, image_start = 0, image_bytes = 2000
initializing HWRPB at 2000
initializing page table at 1f2000
initializing machine state
