I'm having a big problem with two DEC 3000 boxes (models 300 and 600)
running DU V4.0E (M600 now has patch 0002) in which a dialog box reading
"The DT messaging system could not be started." appears right after a
non-root login attempt. It goes on to advise you to check the /etc/hosts
file for the entry "127.0.0.1 localhosts" and "{hostname}." I've checked
this over and over again and everything looks OK. The dialog box also
advises to check the CDE User's Guide for more information. That led
absolutely nowhere. Some of the things I've tried:
- checked the obvious (.login, .profile, .cshrc).
- checked permissions on all "tmp" directories and set user, group, and
other with WRITE permissions.
- made sure "ttsession" is executable (dialog box may have something to do
with ToolTalk).
- installed security patch "ssrt0617u_ttsession.tar" for the hell of it.
- installed the 0002 patch for 4.0E on the M600.
- toggled the default name server.
- restarted network services via the SysMan configuration application.
Of course, all of these actions had no effect. What could be causing this?
This is the most peculiar problem I've ever encountered. This problem
appeared right around the time of a supposed IP address change on the campus
of our university (I've heard it called a "subnet change" - whatever that
is).
Something else happened today: I noticed that the permissions of the hosts,
networks, and gateways files were all out of whack. But after setting them
straight and attempting a straight user login, the attempt hangs before
entering the CDE. What's the deal? Any suggestions experts? I know I'm
not losing my mind because other people on campus are having the same
problem as I am...
