It was a matter of setting ewa0_mode to Twisted-Pair at the console prompt. Here is one of the
many thorough responses:
The NIC mode (speed and media) can be set via console variables. The
variable that you are looking for is "ewa0_mode" (at least for Tulips) --
if you have a second interface it is "ewb0_mode".
To switch to twisted-pair media, do the following:
1. Take the system down to the console propmpt.
2. At the propmpt, enter "show ewa0_mode" that should return "AUI",
your current mode.
3. Set the desired mode, in this case "set ewa0_mode twisted" and
issue an "init" to write the vars to the eeprom and reinit the
system.
TIP: If you aren't sure of the mode, enter a truely bogus value
and relatively modern firmware shoudl give you a list of valid
modes, i.e. "set ewa0_mode XXXX".
