dlt2000 problem

Howdy,
We have a dlt2000xt, using dlt-III tapes with density 10/compress
selected. This should hold 20GB, however, it complains about
running out of tape while backup up a 12.7GB filesystem.
This happends using gnutar and the stock /bin/tar and ends while
dumping the same file.
-r-xr-xr-x root/system 29849165 1999-03-24 16:46 usrweb3/cbt/docs/cbtlib/vc5009e/vc5009ez.exe
The filesystem contains webcbt files.
I backed up just the directory that the file is in with no problem.
I tried 2 different tape drives with the same results.
(We have 4 other alpha 2100's without this problem)

Here are the facts:

actual amount of bytes backed up = 10231229268

system is DU4.0D patch jumbo PK1 on alpha 2100
mt stat shows 62500 BPI density.

tape unit is /dev/rmt0h
