problem with 'su'

Hello osf/du/tru64 managers!

I have this problem:
when I login with my account on this DU4.0d machine, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
variable is set to this by /etc/profile:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/lib/X11:/usr/shlib:/usr/shlib/X11 (and some
more dir)

if now I type 'su', give the root password and look at the same variable
I get this:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=M-^?53M-^?141M-^?/usr/lib:/usr/lib/X11:/usr/shlib:/usr/shlib/X11
(etc. etc.)

Could you tell me why it appears that garbage at begin of the definition?
Does the 'su' command (without '-' option !!!) read some 'profile' file?

Regards
