High I/O loads cause long freezes

We have an 8400 with an HSZ50 on which an advfs filesystem isbuilt.

One of the jobs that is run is GAUSS (from Aptech, not gaussian).
This job appears to be very I/O intensive and if a few instances
are started then response for any process that needs I/O from the
same filesystem as GAUSS can be really bad (>20 seconds), this
includes ls, cat, vi etc.

While the disks obviously have a finite bandwidth, I'd like to be
able to reduce the rsponse time for interactive. Any suggestions
are welcomed.

thanks
