Y2K and what to do!?!!

Dear All,

The powers that be of this wonderful dept I work in and myself are putting together a plan for the coming Y2K - at the moment they (the powers that be) are wanting to perform a full system backup and then power down all the unix boxes. I on the other hand think it would be better leaving them switched on and hence roll naturally (well that's the idea!!) into the new year / century.

My question is this -

Would it be better to power down the machines because of
a) possible national power failure causing shutdown via UPS or possible power spike - doubtful as then the rest of London would be in pitch black !!
b) removing the worry of any possibility of OS blow up due to some Y2K patch that has been missed - I've checked everything with Compaq and they should all be Y2K compliant, ALL systems are running Tru64 v4.0d with PK 4 installed, with firmware revision ranging from 5.1 - 5.3. (if there's something I've missed please send me any info of it)

OR

Would it be better to leave the machines up and running on minimal processes?

A couple of people I've spoken to have said that potentially there could be a hardware problem when bringing the boxes back up as they are not used to being switched off for more than a few minutes.

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions for what they are considering doing this wonderful new year ??

Cheers
