Well, just after sending the message I noticed that the SGI MIPS and
Alpha platforms won't work with gcc 2.95.1. The note states the exact
error I cited and says that it should be fixed in the next release of
gcc. :-(

Note 1: alpha-linux and mips-irix6.5 fail while building parts of
libstdc++-v3 dealing with complex. Builds usually die with this error,
which may be fixed in the next gcc release:
"Unable to access real part of complex value in a hard register on this target"
So I guess I'm out of luck until the next gcc release. I will try the
latest gcc snapshot and see if it works any better. Otherwise, I guess
I lose.
For those who responded, one suggested I use gcc 2.95. Actually, the
gcc I used is 2.95.1. It's libstdc++ that is 2.90.6 and it's not a
part of gcc. It's a separate package.
So thanks, but I guess I may be out of luck for the time being.
